The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles’ (DMV) Vehicle Information Database (VID) has been selected by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) as a finalist in its annual awards program.
“The VID is a prime example of the department’s commitment to developing technological solutions that make doing business with the department easier and save the Nevada taxpayers money,” DMV Director Edgar Roberts said.
The web-based system connects emissions stations with the DMV in real time, giving the department access to emissions data even during a test. The system allows the department to activate or deactivate a station, inspector or analyzer with a single key stroke.
The VID was developed entirely in-house by DMV programmers at no cost other than the staff time. The new database replaced a telephone-based system operated by a private contractor for a savings to the taxpayer of more than $3 million annually.
Emissions stations have been pleased with the new system as well. They now do most routine business with the DMV on the Internet without visiting a DMV office. The new system has enabled many more stations to offer registration renewals as well.
NASCIO’s Recognition Awards are given annually to states that have implemented exceptional programs which have made an important contribution to the operation of efficient state government. This year, NASCIO’s Awards Committee selected 10 recipients from among 33 finalists. Overall, NASCIO received 134 nominations from 30 states. Finalists in NASCIO’s awards program, which is celebrating its 22nd consecutive year, will be honored at NASCIO’s Annual Conference in September.
