A planned national computer outage in Social Security verification means the Department of Motor Vehicles will be unable to issue many licenses or identification cards on Saturday, May 29.
The DMV will not issue any first-time Nevada license, instruction permit or ID card or process any changes in a motorist’s name, date of birth or social security number. The DMV will also not process any renewal where the social security number has not been verified previously.
Other services such as duplicate licenses, address changes and vehicle registration will be unaffected. Those with drive test appointments should keep the appointment.
Nevada uses the national Social Security Online Verification system, which was developed by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and is operated by the Social Security Administration. This system helps combat identity theft and fraud by allowing the DMV to verify an applicant’s stated name, date of birth and Social Security number with his or her Social Security record.
The outage affects only the four Las Vegas offices and one office in Reno that are open on Saturdays. Rural offices are normally closed. All DMV offices will also be closed Monday, May 31 in observance of Memorial Day.
