The Nevada DMV is transitioning to a new, more-secure driver license and identification card that will be issued from a centralized facility. The new system debuted in the Carson City office Friday, October 10. It has been installed in the Reno-area offices and will be installed in the rural offices during December. The new system will be deployed in the Las Vegas offices in January, 2009.
Please do not visit a DMV office just to receive a new license. Your existing license or ID will remain valid until its expiration date. The new format will be issued for renewals and to new drivers and other first-time applicants. The fee for a driver's license, instruction permit or ID card will increase by 75 cents.
Central Issuance (CI) is a safer and more secure way to handle one of the most important documents a person possesses. The Nevada DMV will no longer issue driver's licenses, permits, or identification (ID) cards over the counter in our offices. We will provide a paper interim (temporary) document which will be valid for up to 30 days. The permanent card will be mailed within ten business days.
When you come into a DMV office to apply for, or renew, your driver’s license, permit, or ID card, your existing license will be invalidated and returned to you. Because the interim document is not valid for identification purposes, it will be important for you to carry the invalidated card along with the interim document until you receive your new card in the mail.
Central Issuance affects only the way licenses are issued. It does not affect the proof of identity requirements or any other requirements to obtain a license or ID card. The DMV will continue to offer Internet renewals and other alternate services the same way we always have.

Below are the designs for the Class C Adult and Under 18 driver licenses. Ghost images and microprinting are only some of the new security features.

The interim document issued at the DMV office is pictured below. Since this is not valid for identification, it is important that the motorist keeps any existing license or ID or presents another form of identification such as a passport or a birth certificate.
